22 Oct 2009 School Receives Grant for Nursing Leadership in Rural Health Care
The University of Virginia School of Nursing received a $1.2 million Advanced Education Nursing grant from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), a division of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. This three year funding will help prepare more nursing leaders as specialists in rural health care with expertise in Community/Public Health Leadership (CPHL), Health Systems Management (HSM), or Psychiatric Mental Health (PMH). Students in the Master’s of Science in Nursing (MSN) and Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) programs will take an expanded specialty core, including rural health care leadership and cultural competence.
18 Nov 2009 Kluge Gift to Foster Compassion in End-of-Life Care
A recent $3 million gift from Tussi and John Kluge of Albemarle County will help the University of Virginia Health System better prepare caregivers to support their patients through complex, end-of-life issues. The gift supports two professorships—with $2 million establishing a new endowed professorship in the School of Nursing and $1 million supplementing a current professorship in the School of Medicine.
02 Oct 2009 UVA School of Nursing Receives First-Ever GAANN Grant
The University of Virginia School of Nursing was awarded a $500,000 Graduate Assistance in Areas of National Need (GAANN) grant from the U.S. Department of Education to support three PhD fellowships for the next three years.
Randy Jones, Ph.D., R.N., an assistant professor of nursing at the University of Virginia, has won a competitive grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) to study strategies to help patients feel more at ease in the final stages of lifeJones is one of just 15 nurse educators from around the country to receive the three-year $350,000 “Nurse Faculty Scholar” award this year. It is given to junior faculty who show outstanding promise as future leaders in academic nursing. The grant period begins this month.

The 2009 final exercises were a family affair for Mary Beth White-Comstock and Haley Russell, but not in the traditional sense. The mother/daughter pair both walked the Lawn to receive their BSN degrees from the University of Virginia School of Nursing.

Katie Shannon, who was living on the Lawn this year, was honored with the 2009 Jettie Hill Memorial Award given to a senior female athlete with the highest scholastic average through four years at the University of Virginia.

University of Virginia School of Nursing Dean Dorrie Fontaine will ring the NASDAQ closing bell at 4 p.m. on Friday, May 8 in celebration of National Nurses Week. As a special tribute to nurses, a video will play on the NASDAQ MarketSite Tower at Times Square, the world’s largest stationary video screen. Beginning at 3:50 p.m., a live webcast will show the closing ceremonies at www.nasdaq.com/about/marketsitetowervideo.asx
12 May 2009 UVA Dean Rings NASDAQ Closing Bell to Celebrate National Nurses Week
A happy throng of dozens of nursing faculty, students, alumni, and friends joined Dorrie Fontaine, RN, PhD, FAAN, Sadie Heath Cabaniss Professor of Nursing and Dean of the University of Virginia School of Nursing, as she rang the closing bell at NASDAQ to celebrate National Nurses Week.
Virginia State Health Commissioner, Karen Remley, MD, MBA, will deliver the University of Virginia School of Nursing’s annual Catherine Strader McGehee Memorial Lecture on Wednesday, April 15. Dr. Remley will address Health in the Commonwealth – Two Pressing and Interrelated Issues: Infant Mortality and Childhood Obesity. What can bedside clinicians do? Her presentation will be in McLeod Hall Auditorium at noon with a reception to follow. The lecture is open to the public and parking is available (for a fee) in the 11th Street Parking Garage on 11th Street just south of Main Street.

No agency is responsible for ensuring that the surviving children and the rest of their extended family receive the support and assistance they need, and no one really tracks their welfare and progress.

The University of Virginia School of Nursing has launched a search for several new faculty members. With a new Dean, the opening of a new state-of-the-art nursing education building, and plans under way to renovate the original nursing building, the School is poised for further development. Enrollment has recently increased to nearly 700 students in bachelor’s, master’s, doctoral and post-doctoral programs, including Clinical Nurse Leader (CNL) and Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) programs.
