1st DNP in Virginia
Date released: 01 Dec 2008
Amy Boitnott recently received the first DNP in the state of Virginia. On November 14, Amy defended her Capstone Project, “Childhood Obesity: Development of a Parent-Focused Intervention,” in the Rotunda. The primary aim of this intervention is to target the parent, or primary caretaker, exclusive of their obese child to improve quality of life, family activity and nutritional knowledge and reduce body mass index (BMI). Amy’s intervention is actually being tested in a randomized controlled trial at the Children’s Fitness Clinic here at UVA. The intervention targets the parent only, not the child, and occurs as a 20 minute counseling/education session after the standard medical appointment has concluded. It is her long term goal at the conclusion of this research to adapt this intervention to the primary care setting.
