UVA Dean Rings NASDAQ Closing Bell to Celebrate National Nurses Week

Date released: 12 May 2009

On Friday, May 8, the market closed up – in more ways than one.  A happy throng of dozens of nursing faculty, students, alumni, and friends joined Dorrie Fontaine, RN, PhD, FAAN, Sadie Heath Cabaniss Professor of Nursing and Dean of the University of Virginia School of Nursing, as she rang the closing bell at NASDAQ to celebrate National Nurses Week.  May 8 is National Student Nurses Day.  In addition to the UVA crowd, she was joined at the podium by Frank Shafer, EdD, RN, FAAN, Chief Nursing Officer of Cross Country TravCorps and a number of the company’s nurses.  Dean Fontaine was invited to preside over the closing by Don Johnson, UVA nursing alumnus who is now a Managing Director at NASDAQ.

The Dean’s brief remarks recognized the many contributions of nurses, including at the bedside, in patient education, providing primary care, conducting research, teaching the next generations of nurses, and engaging in policy decisions.  She highlighted nursing’s economic impact and the leadership role nurses will play in health care reform.

In addition to Dean Fontaine’s remarks, a video designed to celebrate nursing was shown on the NASDAQ MarketSite Tower at Times Square, the world’s largest stationary video screen.
