There was great excitement Friday at the University of Virginia School of Nursing when construction workers carried out the tradition of “topping off” at the site of the new Claude Moore Nursing Education Building. Dean Jeanette Lancaster was given the honor of being at the controls of the crane when the last piece of steel was positioned atop the new building. She was “assisted” by crane operator Danny Edwards and members of the Iron Workers Local Union #28 from Richmond, Virginia.
The new building, slated for occupancy in May 2008, will be a companion building to the existing school headquarters in McLeod Hall. Once the Claude Moore Nursing Education Building is completed, McLeod will undergo an extensive renovation, including major expansion and updating of the Clinical Simulation Learning Center. The school is increasing its capacity to educate nurses and nursing faculty to address the critical and growing nursing shortage.
The University of Virginia School of Nursing stands among the top 5% in the nation, ranked 19th by US News & World Report; two of its graduate programs are currently listed in the U.S. News Top Ten. With a vigorous research program that includes studies in rural health care and disparities, oncology, gerontology, complementary therapies and nursing history, the school is ranked 22nd in National Institutes of Health nursing research funding and first in the country for doctoral-student authored NRSA Fellowships.
