Emergency Preparedness
Goal: To provide basic training for nursing students on various aspects of emergency preparedness.
In an actual mass casualty event, nurses would be called upon to deliver care in confusing conditions to potentially huge numbers of patients -- while trying to protect themselves from contamination. Not only would emergency nurses and paramedics be first responders; nurses in all specialties and in all organizations would be called upon to provide care to casualties, or information to the concerned public. Are most nurses prepared to provide the care needed in a mass casualty situation? Absolutely not, and it's not their fault.
This web page is designed to assist nursing faculty and students to explore questions as they relate to nursing's role within Emergency Preparedness. Presently, there are more questions than answers. Perhaps you will be in a future position to provide the answers.
National and State governmental agencies are presently working to organize emergency action plans at the local, state, national and international responses to natural and man made disasters. UVA faculty, graduates, and students are charged with the added responsibility of learning about the nurses role in emergency preparedness and defining its future course.
Why do we need to learn this information? What role do nurses play in emergency preparedness?
