WEBVTT Kind: captions Language: en 00:00:00.960 --> 00:00:07.680 I had a lifelong interest in EMS, I started when I  was 14 years old, and on my 16th birthday I walked   00:00:07.680 --> 00:00:12.800 into my local fire station and I signed up to  volunteer. I didn't really know what I was getting   00:00:12.800 --> 00:00:17.520 myself into, but i could obviously tell like, "Oh  wow this is like a very male dominated setting." 00:00:17.520 --> 00:00:21.840 All I knew was, like, I want to be on an ambulance  I want to be going lights and sirens, that sounds   00:00:21.840 --> 00:00:26.560 incredible, that sounds so cool. And I was just  primarily only interested in the medical part, and   00:00:26.560 --> 00:00:33.600 I really just never gave thought to the fire side.  When I got to UVA and I joined Air Force ROTC,   00:00:33.600 --> 00:00:38.800 that was something else that I also thought I was  not capable of doing. I didn't know that I could   00:00:38.800 --> 00:00:43.040 meet those standards and when I did it kind  of caused me to go back and reflect on,   00:00:43.040 --> 00:00:47.520 "Well what's something else that I never thought  I could do?" Joining the fire station down here,   00:00:47.520 --> 00:00:53.920 I walked in and ironically, the captain of the  crew was female and was super inspiring for me and   00:00:53.920 --> 00:00:59.680 just made a really huge impact on my path there.  During my psych clinical, it was actually   00:00:59.680 --> 00:01:05.760 my last rotation on the floor, there was a pretty  emotional and intense situation on the unit that   00:01:05.760 --> 00:01:10.640 just impacted a lot of the nurses and a lot of  the nursing students, and I think after that my   00:01:10.640 --> 00:01:16.320 psych clinical instructor approached me and was  like, "Ali, I don't know what it is about you   00:01:16.320 --> 00:01:21.120 but I think that you should really, you know,  investigate a little bit more into this psych   00:01:21.120 --> 00:01:26.000 interest that you might have, I think you  would be a really good psych nurse." I realized   00:01:26.000 --> 00:01:32.160 that psych nursing is basically my favorite part  of all types of nursing because so much of it is   00:01:32.160 --> 00:01:37.840 therapeutic communication. So, I'll commission  as a 2nd Lieutenant in May into the U.S. Air   00:01:37.840 --> 00:01:43.440 Force. Later on in life I'd like to specialize  specifically in first responders or in veterans   00:01:43.440 --> 00:01:49.120 that suffer from some sort of trauma disorder,  basically care for the people who have laid   00:01:49.120 --> 00:01:59.760 down their lives to be just dedicated to service  for others. I want to provide service to them.
