March 2006 she spearheaded the development of the first state-wide Nursing Simulation Users Network Conference for the State of Virginia, hosted by UVa and sponsored by Laerdal Medical Corporation. Because of the outcomes of this venture, this conference will be conducted again in June 2007. Childress is also a founding member of the International Nursing Association for Clinical Simulation and Learning (INACSL), and was recognized for her contributions to INACSL with their Service Award in June 2006.

<title>Policies</title>
<description>Policies
Food and Drinks are not permitted in the CSL Center. This policy is reflective of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration guidelines and should be strictly enforced by faculty because of safety and the need to preserve laboratory equipment and resources.
Faculty, teaching assistants, and students using CSLC classrooms will be responsible for leaving labs clean and in order prior to departing. Whenever possible, sit on chairs, rather than beds. If beds are used, please remove and fold bedspreads first and replace soiled linens PRN. Thank you for your help in keeping these labs/classrooms in excellent shape for frequent tours!
      Audiovisuals, Equipment, Models
A copy of the software and audiovisual holdings document is available in the &amp;quot;I-CSLC&amp;quot; directory (under AUDIOVIS.CSLC). Information regarding educational equipment and materials is available in the CSL Center.

      Reserved Materials
Materials pertaining to laboratory or clinical skills and items placed on reserve by faculty members for other courses may be signed out at the CSLC front desk in 3005 (CSL Center Office).

<title>Philosophy</title>
<description>Philosophy
The UVA Clinical Simulation Learning Center will provide students and healthcare providers broad access to the practice environment, directly at the point of learning. Students can immediately apply skills and concepts that would otherwise become diluted between classroom time and clinical practice. The thoughtful use of simulation technologies in the CSLC ensures that students and clinicians will acquire critical skills and judgement and will maintain competency.

<title>Vision</title>
<description> Vision
The CSLC was established in 1990 to help manage the advances/changes that were curricula/program driven at the University of Virginia School of Nursing. (e.g., Front Loading of Clinical Skills, Incorporating an ACNP Program).

The creation of the Theresa A. Thomas Intensive Care Simulation Unit in 1995 was driven by the need to manage issues associated with:

      	Limited Hospital Stays
       	Greater Patient Acuity and Co-Morbidity
Limited Exposure to Unique Clinical Conditions
       	Abbreviated Clinician Orientations

Demanding Clinical Situations for Novice Practitioners
Improving Student’s Confidence &amp; Competence prior to entering the units
Facilitating Transition to Actual Clinical Settings
Improving Quality Care &amp; Patient Safety

The expansion of the CSLC is driven by:

The need to provide additional state-of-the art teaching/learning units to
accommodate increased enrollment addressing the urgent and continuing nursing and nursing faculty shortages
The proven effectiveness of active learning and teaching
The need to expand teaching/service/research partnerships within the UVA Health System and beyond

The CSLC's expansion will incorporate an Operating Room Suite, a Virtual Reality Lab, and a Simulation Research Lab. The existing procedural labs will be upgraded to enhance point-of-learning and clinical practice through the use of high-fidelity simulation resources and standardized patients.

The ultimate goal of the CSLC is to become a Regional Simulation Teaching Resource and Research Center for the Commonwealth of Virginia.
