Neonatal Nurse Practitioner (NNP) specialty

On the cutting-edge of advanced practice, neonatal nurse practitioners (NNPs) provide care through age two in a variety of settings from newborn to acute care

  • In-person class about 1x/month, with the balance of learning completed online
  • Full- and part-time programs available
  • Clinical experiences and faculty affiliations at UVA Health, its top-ranked UVA Children’s Hospital, and beyond
  • 750 clinical practicum hours, and guidance in finding clinical placements with qualified preceptors
  • Ample preparation for the NNP certification exam
  • Guaranteed admission for UVA School of Nursing alumni
  • Application deadline: January 5

The neonatal nurse practitioner (NNP) specialty track is for students enrolled in the BSN to DNP pathway program and as a post-master's certificate. BSN to DNP students may choose neonatal nursing as their specialty focus upon admission, and take NNP specialty courses during the three-year, full-time program. For students who choose the NNP specialty, two years' clinical experience is required.

UVA School of Nursing is dedicated to providing affordable, quality education guided by AACN and NANN education standards, preparing neonatal nurses as leaders, scholars, and expert licensed independent practitioners in the care of neonates and children up to age two. BSN to DNP students who choose the NNP specialty track as their focus are prepared for the NNP certification exam.
