The neonatal nurse practitioner (NNP) specialty track is for students enrolled in the BSN to DNP pathway program and as a post-master's certificate. BSN to DNP students may choose neonatal nursing as their specialty focus upon admission, and take NNP specialty courses during the three-year, full-time program. For students who choose the NNP specialty, two years' clinical experience is required.
UVA School of Nursing is dedicated to providing affordable, quality education guided by AACN and NANN education standards, preparing neonatal nurses as leaders, scholars, and expert licensed independent practitioners in the care of neonates and children up to age two. BSN to DNP students who choose the NNP specialty track as their focus are prepared for the NNP certification exam.

Students who attend UVA are mentored by faculty members who are experts in their field as educators, clinicians, researchers. Their experiences are additionally enriched by access to other disciplines across the University, including religion, ethics, contemplative sciences, mindfulness, and medicine. All graduate nursing students are required to have a laptop.
Though it depends on the degree with which students enter the program (whether it's a BSN or an MSN), DNP students who choose the NNP specialty track typically complete core classes, specialty courses, electives, and 14 credits (750 hours) of direct care practicum:

All DNP students enroll in 14 credits (750 hours) in direct care practicum. Students select courses in consultation with their academic and faculty advisors based on the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to conduct their DNP projects. Additionally, students select master's and/or doctoral-level didactic coursework from across the University.
DNP faculty mentors help students create individualized clinical plans to meet their professional, specialty and geographic goals. Clinical requirements do not need to be met at the UVA Medical Center; the School has existing clinical contracts across the Commonwealth and beyond and students may also ‘bring their own’ clinical sites from the area or outside of Virginia.
Clinical/practicum activities are generally conducted within Virginia, but may be conducted outside Virginia if the University is authorized to place students in that state and pending faculty approval.
