Global Initiatives
We enthusiastically prepare students to embrace the challenges and opportunities of our global community.
Two semester-long study abroad opportunities are available to nursing students: one in New Zealand, at the University of Auckland, and another in Australia, at the University of Queensland. Several J-Term courses are also available to students, including one in Roatan, Honduras, at Clinica Esperanza. Nursing students may apply to be part of UVA's long-standing Valencia First program, which offers a semester-long opportunity to first-year BSN students. Additional opportunities are available through the Center for Global Health Equity, via independent study, through mentored research, and through students' pursuit of a Global Sustainability minor.
Nursing students may incorporate international clinical experiences into their nursing education, including semester-long study abroad and/or programs during January-term and in the summer, or connect with UVA’s International Studies Office (ISO) for opportunities not directly related to nursing.
Semester-long exchanges for School of Nursing students include:
- Valencia First, Valencia, Spain - for first-year BSN students who take first-semester nursing courses along with a Spanish language course
- University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia - a semester-long exchange for nursing students that includes clinical activities during the exchange
- University of Auckland, New Zealand - a semester-long exchange for nursing students in their 4th year that includes clinical activities during the exchange

Summer programs abroad vary according to the year they are offered. Current summer offerings may be found on the Education Abroad website, including a Maymester education abroad program to St. Kitts and Nevis, with clinical instructor Christina Feggans-Langston and School of Public Health Sciences faculty member Kelsie Kelly.
The School of Nursing has relationships with organizations around the world that are able to provide clinical placements to students for which they earn community and public health credit. Offerings vary based on partner sites.
Interested CNL students should contact Cathy Campbell and make plans to attend a Global Initiatives event to learn more.
