#MeetUsMonday - Meet BSN Student Lauren McDermott

Meet Lauren.
Third-year BSN student from Chesterfield, VA, who’s equal parts nursing student, animal lover, and outdoor adventure seeker. Worked at a zoo during high school and has three pets at home: one horse and two dogs. A clinical coach, a former TA, and a member of the Student Nursing Association of Virginia (SNAV). Seeing her fellow students learn, grow, and transform is one of her favorite things about being so involved. Loves to ride horses, travel, hang out with her twin sister. On the fence about whether to become an oncology or labor and delivery nurse, but certain that she’ll ultimately earn a graduate nursing degree to be a nurse practitioner.
WHY NURSING?
“I always knew that I would work in the healthcare, but did not know exactly what occupation. After a family member became hospitalized, I saw first-hand what I wanted to be: a nurse. The nurses supported all of us. I’ll never forget how, when they discovered it was our birthday, they brought my sister and me a gift and sang to us. I still think about it to this day. To be able to support both patients and their families is something I hope to achieve. In the future, I want to be able to look back on my life and know I made a difference in people’s lives. Nurses do just that.“
"I chose the BSN program at UVA for its exceptional clinical opportunities and direct-admit structure and the fact that the program offers early hands-on experience, allowing students to begin clinical rotations in their second semester."

WHY THE BSN PROGRAM AT UVA?
“I chose the BSN program at UVA for its exceptional clinical opportunities and direct-admit structure and the fact that the program offers early hands-on experience, allowing students to begin clinical rotations in their second semester and graduate with hundreds of hours of clinical practice, ensuring that we’re well-prepared for professional environments."
“It’s also a place that’s supportive and inclusive, and where every individual is valued. Beyond offering exceptional educational opportunities, the program is dedicated to student success and well-being. Our professors’ unwavering support fosters a collaborative learning atmosphere, and encourages open discussions that build knowledge and professional growth."
WHAT’S THE BSN PROGRAM BEEN LIKE SO FAR?
“It’s been outstanding, and given me invaluable opportunities to learn from nurse educators from diverse backgrounds. I’ve gained a comprehensive understanding of patient care across the lifespan, engaged in meaningful discussions about healthcare challenges, and developed essential clinical skills that have prepared me for success. The program fosters a supportive learning environment, meeting students where they are, and equipping them with the tools to excel in their nursing careers.”
UVA SCHOOL OF NURSING IN A WORD?
“HOME. I cannot imagine being anywhere else. This is a community where classmates become lifelong friends and faculty serve as mentors. The strong relationships built here create a supportive and trusting environment that is truly invaluable. It is a unique and unparalleled experience.”
