The School is in a six-way tie for No. 13 with NYU, Oregon Health and Science University, University of Alabama at Birmingham, University of Illinois Chicago, and the University of Maryland. It moved up three spots since last year's guide, when it was ranked No. 16 overall.
"While rankings are an inexact method for truly assessing school quality and strength, we are always happy to have external validation," said Dean Marianne Baernholdt, "which is affirmation that our programs are strong, meet students' and healthcare systems' needs. While many aspects of nursing and nursing education continue to change, and churn, we're proud to have the steady regard of U.S. News & World Report and our colleagues at peer institutions who rank us annually as part of this measure."
Earlier in spring 2024, the School's graduate programs earned strong billing in the 2024-25 U.S. News & World Report's Best Grad Schools Guide, including a No. 7-in-the-nation specialty ranking for its acute care nurse practitioner program, and a No. 11 ranking among public graduate nursing programs (No. 18 overall). The School continues to be ranked among the top 3% of American graduate nursing programs.
Previous editions have also given high marks to the School's family nurse practitioner program and its Clinical Nurse Leader program. UVA's master's programs are ranked No. 11 among public institutions (No. 18 overall), and its Doctor of Nursing Practice program is ranked No. 31 overall.
U.S. News & World Report ranked the University of Virginia the No. 4 public school in the country, up one spot from last year. In its 2025 Best Colleges Report, UVA remains the No. 3 best value public University in the country. The University moved up two spots to become the No. 8 best college for veterans.
