Biographical Information

Virginia Bottone Burggraf earned a B.S.N. in Nursing from the Cornell University New York Hospital School of Nursing in 1964 and an M.S.N. in Primary Health Care of the Elderly from Seton Hall University in 1979. She was awarded a Doctorate of Nursing Science in Gerontological Nursing from the Louisiana State University Medical Center School of Nursing in 1998. After serving as a Senior Program Analyst and Senior Policy Fellow for the American Nurses Association, as well as holding professorships at George Mason University and Loyola University, among others, she joined the faculty of the Radford University School of Nursing in 2001. There she held the Marcella J. Griggs Distinguished Professorship in Gerontological Nursing, the first endowed chair for the Radford School of Nursing. Over her career, Burggraf obtained numerous grants funding gerontological research and nursing education projects as well as public health programs, many under the auspices of the American Nurses Association. She has served as a consultant on aging, care for the elderly, and related issues for numerous organizations. Among her voluminous publications are the co-authored text books: Healthy Aging: Principles and Clinical Practice for Clinicians, 2014; and Nursing the Elderly: A Care Plan Approach, 1989; both of which earned “Book of the Year” awards. She was named a fellow of the National Gerontological Nursing Association in 1999 and of the American Academy of Nursing in 2003. The Gerontological Society of America made her a fellow in 2014. These three are a few among the many recognitions of her lifetime contributions to the field.

Scope and Content

The Virginia Burggraf Papers document the career and professional activities of Dr. Virginia B. Burggraf, DNS, RN, C, FAAN, a professor emerita of the Radford University College of Nursing, Radford, Virginia. Dr. Burggraf’s overarching specialty is gerontological nursing, and her papers provide a detailed overview not only of her scholarly interests and accomplishments but also of her extensive work in community outreach, covering all aspects of aging and geriatric health care. Comprehensive listings of Dr. Burggraf’s publications in her curriculum vitae offer scholars a ready cumulative source from which to select and access these items in online databases and library collections. Many popular press essays by Burggraf published for the Senior News, Blue Ridge Edition newspaper under the rubric “Ginger Says” are available in her papers, along with other miscellaneous writing for professional and general periodicals.
