Biography

A primary care nurse practitioner, assistant professor Caitlin Burchfield (BSN ’10, DNP ’23), specializes in geriatrics and palliative care, with additional clinical interests in geriatric frailty, home-based primary care, and interdisciplinary health education. In addition to teaching at the School of Nursing, she works as a primary care provider for UVA’s Home-Base Primary Care Program Virginia at Home. 

After earning BSN from UVA in 2010, Burchfield worked for three years as an inpatient cardiology nurse at UVA Medical Center. In 2013, she moved to the San Francisco Bay Area, working as a cardiology nurse at Stanford Hospital while pursuing a master's at the University of California San Francisco. Burchfield completed an interprofessional primary care residency at the San Francisco Veteran’s Health Administration where she provided primary care for veterans while receiving advanced training in geriatrics, palliative care, and home-based primary care. After residency, she worked for the San Francisco Program for All Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE), providing intensive geriatric primary care to frail elders living in community, returning to UVA in 2019 as a cardiology nurse practitioner. 

In addition to patient care and teaching, she serves as director of Interprofessional Geriatric Education for the UVA School of Medicine.
