Biography

Alanna Bergman, PhD, AGPCNP-BC, RN, AACRN is an assistant professor in the school of nursing. Her research considers how to leverage social and behavioral factors to improve infectious disease care engagement. She has a particular interest in the way that interpersonal, institutional, and structural stigma impacts HIV and tuberculosis outcomes and quality of life.  While completing her dissertation at Johns Hopkins University, she earned an NRSA training grant from NINR evaluating how TB/HIV stigma changes over time and in relation to hallmark clinical events. This work developed and deepened her interest in behavioral interventions, stigma reduction and global health equity.

A primary care nurse practitioner and HIV specialist certified by HANCB, Bergman has worked providing HIV treatment and prevention and management of opportunistic infections for more than 10 years. Her work at Ryan White Clinics spans clinical care, quality improvement, community engagement and grants management. She also has extensive experience as a substance use nurse practitioner in primary care clinics and with the Behavioral Health Leadership Institute in Baltimore, Maryland. Since joining the University of Virginia, Dr. Bergman is part of the Heysell Lab and maintains a clinical practice at the UVA Ryan White Clinic.

Dr. Bergman earned her BSN from Temple University, an MSN from La Salle University, and a PhD from Johns Hopkins University. She completed a post-doctoral fellowship at the University of Virginia School of Nursing in 2025 and was a fellow of the Nursing Science Incubator for Social Determinants of Health Solutions at the Johns Hopkins University Institute for Policy Solutions in the 2026 cohort. Dr. Bergman is an editor for the Journal of the Association of Nurses in AIDS Care.
