Elizabeth Perry Caldwell, PhD, RN, CNE
Biography
A nurse since 2002, associate professor Elizabeth Perry Caldwell, PhD, RN, CNE, joined UVA School of Nursing’s faculty in 2025 after teaching at Baylor University’s Louise Herrington School of Nursing where she taught everything from graduate-level statistics and research courses to accelerated and traditional undergraduate classes in health assessment, pediatrics, and nursing research, work informed by her early clinical roles at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and Children’s Medical Center of Dallas where she worked as a hematology clinical research coordinator, a hematology/oncology/stem cell transplant unit nurse, and an international educator.
Over the last 15 years, Caldwell has published articles in more than 20 peer-reviewed journals on everything from adolescents’ health literacy to medication adherence among patients with heart failure to sickle cell disease. She has presented at both international and national conferences and reviews manuscripts for several journals, including Advances in Nursing Sciences, the Journal of Pediatric Oncology Nursing, and Patient Education and Counseling. A recipient of Baylor’s Daisy Faculty Award, and named among the “Great 100 Nurses of Dallas Fort Worth,” Caldwell also served as a visiting professor at Northrise University in Zambia, Africa. She earned a PhD from UT Austin (Dissertation - “Health literacy of adolescents with sickle cell disease”) and both an MSN and a BSN from the University of Memphis.
