Office for Nursing Research

Supporting Faculty Science and Student Scholarship

The Office for Nursing Research (ONR) facilitates the development of research at the School of Nursing by creating opportunities for original scholarship, enhancing productivity, boosting the richness and intensity of the scholarly environment, and helping students and faculty secure external funding to support their work. ONR works to strengthen the School's nursing research infrastructure to improve efficiency and support scholarship and dissemination of findings, and to build and sustain a diverse community of scholars committed to research and scholarly excellence.

Prospective faculty members whose research interests, experiences, and pursuits align with ours (Aging Research, Healthcare Technology, and Social Determinants of Health) are encouraged to explore current faculty openings, set up meetings with current faculty scholars and HR professionals, and apply to join our growing community of scholars.

ONR staff consult and mentor faculty members through every stage of the proposal process, including:

  • Research concept and grant proposal writing
  • Grant budgeting and budget justification
  • Boilerplate descriptions of the University, entities within and the School of Nursing
  • Assistance with obtaining requisite University signatures
  • Special handling and delivery of grants

ONR also supports nursing students interested in research with:

  • Multiple seminars on research topics throughout the year
  • Individual consultation with visiting scholars
  • Workshops on publication writing
  • A yearlong paid summer internship program for undergraduates

The pre-award phase covers new proposals, agreements, and collaborations—whether funded or unfunded—that require institutional approval. This approval ensures the institution can formally accept funding, engage in collaborations, and track internal awards supported by university resources.

ONR provides guidance on applying for funding, including:

  • Budget development
  • Pre-submission reviews through Hanover
  • Institutional forms and submission processes

Intent to Submit Form

To initiate the proposal process, all applicants must complete an Intent to Submit Form, regardless of whether they are the lead principal investigator (PI) or a collaborator working with a lead PI from another department within UVA, including the School of Medicine. This form allows us to provide early support, ensuring that key deadlines are met, compliance requirements are addressed, and necessary approvals are obtained. It also helps us coordinate resources for budget development, proposal review, and submission logistics.

Overseeing the issuance of sub-awards from grants, ensuring the approval process is efficiently managed, and facilitating the timely submission of invoices for prompt payments
  • Amendments and extensions
Handling changes to the original award, such as budget adjustments, no-cost extensions, or modifications to the scope of work

Additional Post-Award Services

  • Request a project change
Email our grants and contract administrator for any changes you would like to make, such as extensions, re-budgeting, reduction of effort, change of personnel, or change of scope. Sponsor approval may be required, and ONR post-award grants and contracts administrator will guide you through the process
  • Issue a sub-award
ONR post-award grants and contracts administrator will initiate the sub-award setup request with UVA's OSP using the sponsor-approved budget

In addition, the post-award administrator supports you during the award closeout process, ensuring all reporting and contractual obligations are met. They also provide ongoing assistance with financial management, compliance, and audits from the initial execution of the award to its final closeout.

Overall, the post-award administrator ensures your project runs smoothly, stays within budget, and remains compliant with all regulatory and sponsor requirements, allowing you to focus on your research and project goals.
