ABSN student Moriah Wauer in front of the Rotunda with her stethoscope
Moriah Wauer is an ABSN student who transferred from NVCC and dreams of being an OR nurse and serving aboard a Mercy Ship providing care for patients abroad.

Meet Moriah.

A guitar-playing nursing student who grew up rural on a cattle farm in Spotsylvania County, VA, and among Northern California redwoods, before settling in Northern Virginia. A Northern Virginia Community College grad who hikes, reads, cooks in her off-time. A ferocious volleyball player who studied abroad in Jordan, is learning to speak Arabic, and is a member of the class of 2026. Future OR nurse who plans to serve aboard a Mercy Ship providing care for patients abroad.

HER PATH TO NURSING

“I spent my first year of college as an education major, on track to become a schoolteacher by the age of 21. But my passion for the health sciences won out, and I decided to switch my major to nursing. I chose the ABSN program because it was the perfect way to dive head-first into the nursing field as a transfer student!”

"The ABSN program has been everything that you would expect: challenging, fasted-paced, and SO rewarding."

—Moriah Wauer, Accelerated BSN student

WHAT THE PROGRAM AND UVA ARE LIKE

“Everything you’d expect: challenging, fasted-paced, and so rewarding. Over the past year, I have learned in-depth about pathophysiology and pharmacology and have performed foundational nursing skills in various hospital units with the guidance of my clinical instructors.

“I spent this past J-Term abroad in Jordan and it was the best experience of my life, as well as my first time outside of the country. I love that UVA prioritizes cultural competency for all majors, including nursing. I got to travel with a diverse group of students from various backgrounds and areas of study. We spent two weeks exploring the major cities and learning about Jordanian culture and history. The highlights included swimming in the Dead Sea, riding camels in the Wadi Rum desert, and exploring Petra. I am proud to say that I can speak a (very) little bit of Arabic now!”

WHY UVA?

“The School prepares you to be the best possible nurse. We have the most supportive faculty, brilliant professors, and resilient students who work hard and uplift each other every day single day.”

UVA SCHOOL OF NURSING IN A WORD?

AMBITIOUS. The School itself is ambitious in its dedication to improving the world of nursing for both professionals and patients. The students are ambitious in their pursuit of knowledge and the care they bring to their patients every day.”
