Biography

Alanna Bergman, PhD, MSN, AGNP-BC, RN, a nurse practitioner, is a post-doctoral research fellow in the Office of Nursing Research. Bergman came to UVA in mid-2024 from Johns Hopkins School of Nursing, where she studied the impact of structural, institutional, and interpersonal stigma on care engagement and quality of life. That work, and her subsequent dissertation, developed and deepened her interest in global health, health equity, stigma reduction, and infectious diseases including HIV, tuberculosis, and infectious hepatitis.

An HIV specialist and certified by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency, Bergman has worked as a substance use nurse practitioner with the Behavioral Health Leadership Institute, an infectious disease nurse practitioner, with Spectrum Health Services, driving quality improvement at a Ryan White program and as an adult NP focused on people with HIV at Einstein Immunodeficiency Center.

An NINR F31 grantee, a Sigma/Association of Nurses in AIDS Care grantee, assistant editor for the Journal of the Association of Nurses in AIDS Care, and a peer reviewer for AIDS and Behavior, Bergman has taught courses in pharmacology, epidemiology, and health assessment. With more than a dozen publications to her name, Bergman has also been part of research teams led by nurse scientists in both domestic and international environments.
