Biographical Information
Lucy Lee Douglass Buchholz (1926-2017) was a Charlottesville, Virginia native and longtime resident, a 1946 graduate of the University of Virginia School of Education (B.S.) and a 1969 Master's graduate. She served for more than thirty years in the County of Albemarle and City of Charlottesville public school systems. Buchholz was the niece of two of the three women represented in this collection: Roy Beazley and Edith Beazley Miller, both of whom were nurses.
Roy Beazley (1902-1985) had a forty-year career at the University of Virginia after earning a diploma from the University Hospital nursing program in 1930. Beazley also earned a B.S. degree in Nursing Education from the University in 1941 and a Masters in School of Nursing Administration from Columbia Teachers' College in 1941. Holding numerous positions relative to nursing education and services at the University Hospital, Beazley is best known for her tireless and successful efforts to professionalize nursing education, culminating with the establishment of the School of Nursing as a formal academic division of the University in 1949. Beazley also served on the Virginia State Board of Nursing, including six years as the Board's president, and was instrumental in establishing Licensed Practical Nursing programs for African American students. She retired in 1969, the first professor emerita of the University.
Her sister, Edith Beazley Miller (1909-2003), also graduated from the University Hospital nursing degree program in 1930. She worked as a private duty nurse in the 1940s and 50s, and spent many years of her career at the Martha Jefferson Hospital, Charlottesville, Virginia. There she instructed students in the licensed practical nursing course organized at MJH for students from Albemarle High School.
Mabel E. Montgomery (1902-1989) joined the nursing faculty at the University of Virginia in 1938, and in 1941 became instructor and director of nursing at Stuart Circle Hospital, Richmond. That same year she joined the Virginia State Board of Nursing, which she served for thirty years, more than twenty as executive director.
Scope and Content
The Lucy Buchholz Collection is in effect a small tribute to three women whose careers were critical for the development of nursing education in Virginia as well as for the professionalization of nursing practice. The bulk of the collection (11 folders) concerns Roy Beazley, faculty member of the University of Virginia and Director of Nursing at the University Hospital; included are a few pieces of correspondence, newspaper clippings, keepsake programs, an essay, and photographs. Other items belonged to her sister, Edith Beazley Miller, and include private duty nurse receipt books and keepsakes arranged in five folders. Ms. Miller was an instructor for a local high school LPN program and nurse at Martha Jefferson Hospital. The single folder containing biographical items for Mable Montgomery includes a portrait photograph, newspaper articles honoring Montgomery, and an award presentation text. Ms. Montgomery was an officer and Executive Director of the Virginia State Board of Nursing for three decades.
